How do you create new value in an existing commercial asset without relying on another architectural upgrade?
As hybrid work reshaped how people use offices and expectations around ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) increased, traditional approaches to upgrading commercial assets were no longer enough. Cbus Property wanted to explore whether new services, experiences and ongoing collaboration with tenants could create value beyond the physical building.
The challenge was to turn an existing asset into a prototype for the future of Work Life, one that continuously listens, learns and improves through its community.

Design as a conversation between people and place
CraigWalker designed the LivingWorkLab as a prototype for a different way of improving commercial assets. The Lab brought tenants, designers and specialists together to identify, test and prototype new services and experiences.
Nine themed co-labs explored emerging priorities including wellbeing, social cohesion, biodiversity and workplace adaptability. Each brought together tenant insight, spatial prototyping and service design to test ideas in real time. Supported by a consortium of Woods Bagot, ARUP, Aurecon and Breathe Architecture, the Lab established a new model of collaboration across disciplines.
A testbed for future workplaces
The LivingWorkLab demonstrated how an existing commercial asset could evolve through services, participation and continual learning, without relying on physical redevelopment alone.
It gave Cbus Property a repeatable model for engaging tenants and measuring impact across future assets.
